How we facilitated the first-ever EdTechRoundUp TeachMeet…

Mosaic of #TMETRU09 participants (on Flickr)

#TMETRU09 was a fantastic evening. To my knowledge, it was not only the first-ever EdTechRoundUp TeachMeet, but the first one done solely online! Go to http://edtechroundup.wikispaces.com/TMETRU09 for all of the links and resources related to the event.

Some people have asked how we did organized a completely-online TeachMeet. Here’s a brief overview:

Well before the TeachMeet

  1. Discussed the who? what? when? where? why? questions as a group.
  2. Set up a wiki page on the TeachMeet wiki
  3. Assign roles (overview, setting up accounts, etc.)
  4. Thought up a hashtag (in this case #TMETRU09) and used it in tweets from then on
  5. Encouraged people to sign up to record a presentation or do one live.
  6. Set up a Diigo account to collate links.

Just before the TeachMeet

  1. Booked FlashMeeting.
  2. Signed up for Justin.tv for live stream.
  3. Tidied up the wiki page.
  4. Reminded those who hadn’t recorded presentations to do so.
  5. Sent out tweets building up anticipation.
  6. Tested using SoundFlower and CamTwist (Mac-only?) to stream out FlashMeeting and presentations.
  7. Discussed roles on the evening (who to host, introduce videos, etc.)
  8. Sent presenters private link to FlashMeeting.
  9. Made sure instructions for those viewing were clear on the wiki.

Evening of the TeachMeet

  1. Hosts arrive early to FlashMeeting, check everything is working OK.
  2. Last minute changes/preparations sorted.
  3. Videos checked to make sure they’re working.
  4. Barrage of tweets with hashtag sent out (add ‘Please RT!’)
  5. Press both ‘Broadcast’ and ‘Record’ at Justin.tv.
  6. Keep things light-hearted and be prepared for things to go wrong…

#TMETRU09 tonight!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #28 – TeachMeet Midlands 2009, ETRU Special planning & a general edtech discussion

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. Those of use who attended TeachMeet Midlands 2009 (either physically, or virtually through the FlashMeeting) discussed our experiences. There was some further planning for an upcoming ETRU Special, and then the rest of our time was dedicated to general edtech news, views and opinions! :-)

Many thanks to Tony Sheppard for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #27 – Google Sketchup, presenting on ‘collaboration’ and open textbooks.

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Bob Hill. On the agenda was the educational uses of Google Sketchup, the best ways to practice what you preach when presenting on ‘collaboration’, and the concept of ‘Open Source Textbooks’. The latter, Stuart Meldrum has been keen to point out, is not a wiki textbook, but a collaboratively-authored hard-copy effort!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #26 – Jailbreaking iPhones, rolling out Wordpress on a national level, and parental engagement

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Dai Barnes and Doug Belshaw. Dai began by waxing lyrical about his ‘jailbroken’ iPhone, with others contributing what a wonderful thing it is to be released from the fruit shackles. Our major points for discussion were John Heffernan’s plans to roll out Wordpress Multi-User across schools in Ireland, and engaging parents through the use of technology (mainly VLEs, to be fair…) :-)

EdTechRoundUp Special on Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)

ETRU SpecialThis ETRU Special was co-hosted by Dai Barnes and Doug Belshaw. We’ve been discussing Virtual Learning Environments and Learning Platforms on-and-off for weeks now, so the time had come to have the chance to invite some experts in and have a lengthier discussion. We talked to Jeff O’Hara (@zemote), co-founder of Edmodo, discussed the various options when it comes to integrating a VLE, and some ideas for best practice. We finished with approaches for getting all staff onboard when deploying a VLE institution-wide. :-)

Many thanks to Sinclair Mackenzie for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #25 – How to become an ‘expert’, SMART tables & Pico projectors.

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. After a quick discussion about what constitutes an ‘expert’ in the field of educational technology and how to become one (see this blog post) we moved onto Mary Cooch’s presentation at MoodleMoot. We finished with some discussion of hardware: Tom Barrett told us about the SMART table he’s got on loan in his classroom, then Doug told us about the Optoma Pico projector in which he’s invested! :-)

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #24 – User experiences of VLEs and a general discussion.

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Dai Barnes. Even though it was Easter weekend, there were still plenty of educators willing to share ideas and opinions about Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and have a general chat about the world of educational technology! :-)
