EdTechRoundUp Weekly #88 – #TEDxLondon and #DMLbadges

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s podcast is a lot better than last week’s, thank goodness! Doug Belshaw, Dai Barnes, Pete Bell and Nick Dennis were around on Skype to discuss the TEDxLondon event and the launch of DML ‘badges’.

We mentioned Google Art Project right at the end of the discussion but Call Recorder for Skype managed to cut that off. Sorry.

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #87 – How NOT to record a podcast…

ETRU Weekly

The should-know-better award goes to Doug Belshaw this week, who managed to not only get kicked out of Google+ several times, but also managed to record everyone else *except* himself.

As a result, this is a much shorter podcast than usual. Our apologies, we’ll be back to normal (or what substitutes for ‘normal’) soon!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #86 – ICT curriculum, ALT-C 2011 and more!

ETRU Weekly

We missed a couple of weeks (apologies!) due to various commitments. In addition, this week’s recording is both amusing and frustrating. Amusing due to the fun we had putting it together; frustrating in that the audio recording dropped due to Camtasia being more-than-averagely flaky on Dai’s Mac.

Oh well, you can’t win them all. :-)

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #85 – Flipped thinking and more on Open Badges

ETRU WeeklySince we’ve relaunched we’ve had different and new people joining us each week on the Google+ hangout, which is great. This week we had Darren, Marc, Nick and Debs sharing their thoughts and opinions on a range of things including Open Badges (again!), Dropbox alternatives and ‘flipped’ classrooms.

Notes (links and quotations) are below for further investigation:

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #84 – Mozilla Open Badges and assessment

ETRU WeeklyWe had a problem with capturing the audio last time around when Doug tried to not only record but stream out the audio. This week we not only managed to sort it properly (thanks Dai!) and also captured the links. Epic win.

Our weekly Sunday night discussions will once again go out as ‘EdTechRoundUp Weekly’. This episode is therefore #84.

We’re back with weekly Google+ Hangouts!

Google PlusIn preparation for a full re-launch in September 2011 we’ve starting meeting up again in Google+ on Sunday evenings at 20.00 BST (GMT+1) to discuss all things related to educational technology and e-learning.

As a bit of experiment we recorded last week’s Google+ Hangout and have added it to the podcast feed. We’re aware of some quality issues but we’d love to hear your feedback!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #46 – Web browsers, Internet filtering in schools & technical skills needed by educators

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led for the first time by Daniel Needlestone, who did a great job! In this week’s meeting we discussed web browsers, internet filtering in schools and the technical skills required by educators.

Collated the links from this week’s meeting are available via our Diigo account.

How we facilitated the first-ever EdTechRoundUp TeachMeet…

Mosaic of #TMETRU09 participants (on Flickr)

#TMETRU09 was a fantastic evening. To my knowledge, it was not only the first-ever EdTechRoundUp TeachMeet, but the first one done solely online! Go to http://edtechroundup.wikispaces.com/TMETRU09 for all of the links and resources related to the event.

Some people have asked how we did organized a completely-online TeachMeet. Here’s a brief overview:

Well before the TeachMeet

  1. Discussed the who? what? when? where? why? questions as a group.
  2. Set up a wiki page on the TeachMeet wiki
  3. Assign roles (overview, setting up accounts, etc.)
  4. Thought up a hashtag (in this case #TMETRU09) and used it in tweets from then on
  5. Encouraged people to sign up to record a presentation or do one live.
  6. Set up a Diigo account to collate links.

Just before the TeachMeet

  1. Booked FlashMeeting.
  2. Signed up for Justin.tv for live stream.
  3. Tidied up the wiki page.
  4. Reminded those who hadn’t recorded presentations to do so.
  5. Sent out tweets building up anticipation.
  6. Tested using SoundFlower and CamTwist (Mac-only?) to stream out FlashMeeting and presentations.
  7. Discussed roles on the evening (who to host, introduce videos, etc.)
  8. Sent presenters private link to FlashMeeting.
  9. Made sure instructions for those viewing were clear on the wiki.

Evening of the TeachMeet

  1. Hosts arrive early to FlashMeeting, check everything is working OK.
  2. Last minute changes/preparations sorted.
  3. Videos checked to make sure they’re working.
  4. Barrage of tweets with hashtag sent out (add ‘Please RT!’)
  5. Press both ‘Broadcast’ and ‘Record’ at Justin.tv.
  6. Keep things light-hearted and be prepared for things to go wrong…

#TMETRU09 tonight!
