ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. There were plenty of educators willing to share their thoughts and experience about data management applications, barriers to educational change, and the potential for Virtual Learning Environments, or VLEs, in schools.

EdTechRoundUp #22 – Twitter-powered interviews, ‘My Web’, and the new English Primary Curriculum

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. We started with a discussion of Doug’s unusual interview technique (using Twitter) that he successfully employed for a ‘Director of E-Learning’ position. We then moved onto a blog post by Robert Jones entitled My Web is Better, and more on the leaked primary curriculum.

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Dave Stacey. It being Mothering Sunday in England, there was a lot fewer present in the FlashMeeting than normal! The agenda items included ways in which educators within a local authority can communicate effectively, online surveys, and a collaborative Google presentation, ‘Techy Tips for Non-Techy Teachers’

EdTechRoundUp #20 – Copyright4Learning, Functional Skills, and wearable technology

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. The agenda was somewhat spartan and so we spent a good deal of time discussing some of the major items. We started with a new wiki that Theo Kuechel and Mark Clarkson have set up entitled Copyright4Learning, touched upon ‘Functional Skills’, and then moved onto wearable technology and whether it’s a ‘game changer’.

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #19 – Edtech videos, indispensible tools, copyright, and iPhone apps in education

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Dai Barnes. We had a packed agenda to get through, mostly contributed by Dai himself! The majority of our conversation centred around the use of children in videos calling for educational change, the ins-and-outs of copyright legislation in UK schools, and iPhone apps that are useful in education. Joe Rowing had a quick rant about RocketScience and Dave Stacey wanted our opinions on netbooks in classrooms. All good stuff! :-)

Many thanks to Joe Rowing for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #18 – School subjects, Open Sim, the Semantic Web and Digital Britain

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Joe Rowing and then, after some problems with FlashMeeting, wrapped up by Dai Barnes. We discussed whether educational technology contributes to the demise of school subjects, whether the ‘Semantic Web’ is something educators should be getting involved with now, Open Sim, and the ins-and-outs of the Digital Britain report.

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #17 – The future of EdTechRoundUp

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw and focused on the future of EdTechRoundUp. Those at the Admin meeting fed back to the rest of the group about the decision made and discussed where we were headed. The new features and areas of EdTechRoundUp are summarised in this blog post. We’d like to invite those reading this post and listeners to the podcast to get more involved with what we do. :-)

ETRU Hub and Forum

Eagle-eyed visitors may have noticed two new tabs to the top of this blog. At the previously-mentioned EdTechRoundUp FlashMeeting, we discussed ways in which we could help develop more of a community around ETRU (as we shall henceforth abbreviate ourselves to!)

We’ve two new sections, both of which anyone can participate in and through:

EdTechRoundUp Hub

etru-hub

This syndicates blog posts from those part of the ETRU community that are on topics related to educational technology. It won’t syndicate all your blog posts (just the ones you choose), so if you’d like to have yours featured on the ETRU Hub, please get in touch with Doug (@dajbelshaw) who’s organizing that. :-)

EdTechRoundUp Forum

etru-forum

To encourage those who listen to the podcast to interact with the ETRU community, the Forum has been set up. Agenda items from the wiki shall be posted so questions can be asked and conversations continued!

Please let us know what you think about the new additions. :-D

EdTechRoundup Admin FlashMeeting

Background:

EdTechRoundup is going from strength to strength. In order for this growth and success to continue, some of us felt that some planning and discussion regarding the future of the group was required. As a result, this evening a few of us who have a stake in EdTechRoundup met together via FlashMeeting to talk about the future of the group. These were:

Dai Barnes, Tom Barrett, Doug Belshaw, Joe Dale, Louise Jones, Sinclair Mackenzie, David Noble, and Joe Rowing.

A couple of others (John Johnston, Lisa Stevens) were unable to make it due to other commitments.

Agenda:

  1. Roadmap - where are we headed?
  2. Sustainability – allocation of roles so everyone knows who’s doing what.
  3. Guides – showing how to go about capturing audio, editing podcast, etc.
  4. Security – who is going to have access to what?
  5. Technologies – are we happy with what we use? Is FlashMeeting serving our needs?
  6. Any other business - has anyone got any other suggestions?

Decisions made:

  • Due to capacity issues with FlashMeeting we shall:
    • Ask E2BN/Open University if we can have a larger ‘room’
    • Ask those intending to attend a weekly Sunday FlashMeeting to add their name to the relevant wiki page in advance. Those beyond #25 (in the first instance) may be asked to leave in favour of those who have signed up.
  • We shall not be asking for monetary contributions for members at the moment.
  • The group shall be known by the abbreviation ETRU, being the tag to be used on blogs, wikis, etc. On Twitter, the hashtag #ETRU should be used.
  • Dai Barnes shall be in charge of passwords for EdTechRoundup accounts. He will change them regularly and inform those who need to know by way of a collaborative Google Doc.
  • As a group, we shall work towards producing guides on how to do the administrative tasks we all have a part in. This should allow enthusiastic but less technically-able newcomers to take a part in the group.
  • A new installation of Wordpress somewhere on the EdTechRoundup domain (either subfolder or subdomain) shall collate posts from ETRU member blogs. These will have either been tagged ETRU or be within a category of that name. The collated posts will be displayed in excerpt form on this ‘hub’. We shall be following the model of NextGenTeachers, of which Tom Barrett and Doug Belshaw were part.

If you’d like to view/listen to the two-hour meeting, you can do so at the link below! Please add any thoughts you have in the comments section. :-D

EdTechRoundup Weekly #16 – Open Source Software and circulating ‘good practice’ within schools

This week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw and focused on two main areas. As a number of us and the wider community are involved in the Open Source Schools project, we discussed the role of Open Source Software in schools and our favourite examples.  The only other agenda item was raised by Dave Stacey who asked how we circulated ‘good practice’ regarding educational technology within our schools. Both topics generated some quality discussion.  :-)

Many thanks to Sinclair Mackenzie for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!
