EdTechRoundup Weekly #15 – Learner voice and Internet filtering (again!)

Note: Dai mentions that this is ETR 16 but please be assured that this is actually ETR 15! ;-)

Dai Barnes steered us through this week’s meeting. We discussed the potential of educational technology with regard to ‘learner voice’ (sometimes called ’student’ or ‘pupil’ voice), the age-old problem of Internet filtering, as well as some asides on active learning software and why teachers should be able to ‘Bluecast’ files to multiple mobile devices quickly and easily. :-)

Many thanks to Sinclair Mackenzie for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

EdTechRoundup Special – Student blogging and WordPress Multi-User (WPMU)

ETR Special“Best EdTechRoundup so far!”, “You guys are awesome!”, “I really enjoyed that discussion!” – just some of the comments by participants after last Sunday’s special on students blogging and using WordPress Multi-User (WPMU).

We had a number of participants who are experts on WPMU, including Jim Groom from the US and Dave Gilmour from East Lothian (Scotland).

Many thanks to John Johnston for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

The ETR wiki page for this special meeting was, appropriately, very much a team affair! :-)

ETR Weekly #14 – Work/life balance, Computing histories & have we finally lost patience with Edublogs.org?

Dai Barnes ably guided us through this week’s packed agenda. We managed to squeeze into the 50-odd minutes:

  • Work/life balance
  • Your history of computing
  • Nintendo DS – what games to buy and when to use them
  • Is there such a thing as a good Acceptable User Policy (AUP)?
  • Blog hosts – have we finally lost patience with the ads on Edublogs.org?

Many thanks to John Johnston for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

ETR Weekly #13 – BETT 2009, TeachMeet and Diigo

Joe Rowing expressed a desire to lead the discussion this week and did a bang-up job of keeping everyone on track. After Doug Belshaw plugged our weekly FlashMeetings at TeachMeet on the Friday night of BETT 2009, we had a record turnout – 25 – on the Sunday evening! The discussion focused on the best and worst elements of BETT, how TeachMeet might be both protected and developed, and the merits of Diigo over Delicious for social bookmarking.

Many thanks to John Johnston for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

ETR Weekly #12 – BETT 2009, Jumpbox, and more!

Dai Barnes did a sterling job steering the conversation this week. Whether it was because it was the week before the all-pervasive BETT 2009, because it was the weekend after the first week back at school, or a combination of the two, there were less in attendance. Thankfully, the quality of the conversation didn’t drop with the numbers and, in fact, the fruits of the discussion in terms of an installation of Jumpbox, can be found at EdTechRoundup.co.uk :-)

Many thanks to John Johnston for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

ETR Weekly #11 – CPD, Edtech-related resolutions, and more on Education in 2020

The first EdTechRoundup Weekly FlashMeeting of 2009 saw a welcome return of the mix of (mainly UK-based) educators discussing all things to do with educational technology. Daniel Needlestone discussed the slot he had to promote edtech/elearning at his school during an in-service training day. After that, we discussed the resolutions we’d made relating to educational technology, and then we talked more about education in 2020.

Happy New Year!

Many thanks to John Johnston for sorting out the audio. :-)

ETR Weekly #10 – BETT 2009, Wiki textbooks and Education in 2020

This week’s EdTechRoundup Weekly started with a discussion on what education was going to look like the year 2020. We also discussed who’s doing what at BETT 2009 and a little bit about what people can expect from TeachMeet on the Friday night.

We moved on to discuss wiki textbooks and why they haven’t taken off as well as some ideas for Christmas lessons. :-)

Many thanks to Joe Dale for sorting out the audio. :-)

Unfortunately the two wiki pixies were not in attendance, meaning the ETR wiki page for this week’s show is looking somewhat sparse…

ETR Weekly #9 – Not quite a ‘blogging special’

EdTechRoundup Weekly

This week’s EdTechRoundup Weekly followed a week where a lot of people had been busy and therefore not had chance to attend. As a result there was some confusion as to whether it was a ‘blogging special’ or not. In the end, we did mention blogs and issues to do with them, along with:

  • Feedback from the MirandaMod2 (un?)conference
  • Internet filtering and Louise Jones’ Twitter poll
  • A collaborative Google Docs-powered presentation on how to use Netbooks effectively in the classroom
  • A discussion about online calendars, integration with Moodle, and possible ‘homework-casting’ via iTunes!

Dai Barnes is now a firm fan of Diigo for the ETR links. You can access the relevant ones from this week’s meeting here.

Lisa Stevens, a.k.a. wiki pixie herself, is in the process of updating the ETR wiki here to include the notes from the meeting.

ETR Weekly #8 – Talking Postcards, TweetMeet and E-Learning in Schools

You may be asking what happened to ETR Weekly #7 – erm, good question and we’re on the case…

This week’s ETR FlashMeeting focused around collaboration and training. Tom Barrett talked about his organising a TweetMeet (using tweetmeet.eu) in Nottingham on Saturday 6th December. Doug Belshaw provided feedback about his new role as E-Learning Staff Tutor at his school, which produced some interesting discussion. We also discussed some useful technologies, such as ‘talking’ postcards and the like… :-D

Dai Barnes is experimenting with using Diigo instead of Delicious for the ETR links. You can access the relevant links from this week’s meeting here.

EdTechRoundup podcast episode #6 – Internet Filtering

PodcastEarlier in the summer, teacher Krysia Smyth interviewed a Local Authority (LA) Network Manager, Rea Wallace, about the subject of Internet filtering in schools.

The discussion between Rea and Krysia, and then Krysia and David Noble (both Edtechroundup contributors), covers: internet access within LA schools, AUPs, the role of teachers in policy on ‘blocking’, and possible future directions.  Don’t miss it! :-)

Many thanks to Rea for taking part in the interview.

Show notes are here.
