EdTechRoundUp Weekly #25 – How to become an ‘expert’, SMART tables & Pico projectors.

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. After a quick discussion about what constitutes an ‘expert’ in the field of educational technology and how to become one (see this blog post) we moved onto Mary Cooch‘s presentation at MoodleMoot. We finished with some discussion of hardware: Tom Barrett told us about the SMART table he’s got on loan in his classroom, then Doug told us about the Optoma Pico projector in which he’s invested! :-)

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #23 – Data systems (MIS), ‘Livescribe’ and planning a ETRU special on VLEs!

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw. There were plenty of educators willing to share their thoughts and experience about data management applications, barriers to educational change, and the potential for Virtual Learning Environments, or VLEs, in schools.

Many thanks to Tony Sheppard for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

Louise Jones has kindly tidied up the ETR wiki page for this week’s meeting, whilst Dave Stacey has done a sterling job in making the ETR wiki homepage look fabulous!

EdTechRoundUp Weekly #19 – Edtech videos, indispensible tools, copyright, and iPhone apps in education

ETRU WeeklyThis week’s meeting was led by Dai Barnes. We had a packed agenda to get through, mostly contributed by Dai himself! The majority of our conversation centred around the use of children in videos calling for educational change, the ins-and-outs of copyright legislation in UK schools, and iPhone apps that are useful in education. Joe Rowing had a quick rant about RocketScience and Dave Stacey wanted our opinions on netbooks in classrooms. All good stuff! :-)

EdTechRoundup Weekly #16 – Open Source Software and circulating ‘good practice’ within schools

This week’s meeting was led by Doug Belshaw and focused on two main areas. As a number of us and the wider community are involved in the Open Source Schools project, we discussed the role of Open Source Software in schools and our favourite examples.  The only other agenda item was raised by Dave Stacey who asked how we circulated ‘good practice’ regarding educational technology within our schools. Both topics generated some quality discussion.  :-)

ETR Weekly #14 – Work/life balance, Computing histories & have we finally lost patience with Edublogs.org?

Dai Barnes ably guided us through this week’s packed agenda. We managed to squeeze into the 50-odd minutes:

  • Work/life balance
  • Your history of computing
  • Nintendo DS – what games to buy and when to use them
  • Is there such a thing as a good Acceptable User Policy (AUP)?
  • Blog hosts – have we finally lost patience with the ads on Edublogs.org?

Many thanks to John Johnston for grabbing the audio from the FlashMeeting!

ETR Weekly #12 – BETT 2009, Jumpbox, and more!

Dai Barnes did a sterling job steering the conversation this week. Whether it was because it was the week before the all-pervasive BETT 2009, because it was the weekend after the first week back at school, or a combination of the two, there were less in attendance. Thankfully, the quality of the conversation didn’t drop with the numbers and, in fact, the fruits of the discussion in terms of an installation of Jumpbox, can be found at EdTechRoundup.co.uk :-)

ETR Weekly #11 – CPD, Edtech-related resolutions, and more on Education in 2020

The first EdTechRoundup Weekly FlashMeeting of 2009 saw a welcome return of the mix of (mainly UK-based) educators discussing all things to do with educational technology. Daniel Needlestone discussed the slot he had to promote edtech/elearning at his school during an in-service training day. After that, we discussed the resolutions we’d made relating to educational technology, and then we talked more about education in 2020.

Happy New Year!

Many thanks to John Johnston for sorting out the audio. :-)

ETR Weekly #5 – Interactive Whiteboards, Isle of Wight Conference, Organising ICT CPD

This week, several of our regular participants were still travelling home from the  2008 Isle of Wight Conference when we recorded the show.  Dai Barnes did a great job standing in for regular host Doug Belshaw.  We spoke briefly about interactive whiteboards before Joe Dale, organiser of the Isle of Wight Conference, joined us to reflect on this year’s event.  The IoW Conference FlashMeeting mentioned by Joe was recorded and can be viewed here .

Dan Needlestone led a discussion on CPD issues and the issues surrounding ICT training for teachers.

ETR Weekly #4 – TeachMeet 2009, Google Docs for online reports & ‘digital permanence’

ETR Weekly

We were back to full strength for this week’s FlashMeeting. In addition, it was great to welcome a couple of North American educators into the mix to give their perspective on all this edtech-nical!

This time around we discussed TeachMeet East Midlands 2009, Tom Barrett’s proposal to use Google Docs for online reporting to parents, the idea and importance of ‘digital permanence’, and much more besides. :-D

ETR Weekly #3 – Open Source, Internet Safety update, iPhone Apps & more!

ETR WeeklyThere were a good number of regulars missing from this week’s FlashMeeting – all for good reasons – but it was great to welcome some new faces. We began with a quick plug for David Noble’s Edonis project, which forms part of his Ed.D. research. We then discussed Doug, José & Ian’s involvement in an upcoming Becta-funded Open Source Schools project and issues surrounding that. After this, we moved on to an update on Internet Safety materials, prompted by Louise Jones, and finally we got to the wonder of iPhones and educational uses for the plethora of applications available for it.
