There was some further planning for an upcoming ETRU Special, and then the rest of our time was dedicated to general edtech news, views and opinions!

This week’s meeting was led by Bob Hill. On the agenda was the educational uses of Google Sketchup, the best ways to practice what you preach when presenting on ‘collaboration’, and the concept of ‘Open Source Textbooks’. The latter, Stuart Meldrum has been keen to point out, is not a wiki textbook, but a collaboratively-authored hard-copy effort!

This week’s meeting was led by Dai Barnes and Doug Belshaw. Dai began by waxing lyrical about his ‘jailbroken’ iPhone, with others contributing what a wonderful thing it is to be released from the fruit shackles. Our major points for discussion were John Heffernan’s plans to roll out Wordpress Multi-User across schools in Ireland, and engaging parents through the use of technology (mainly VLEs, to be fair…)

This ETRU Special was co-hosted by Dai Barnes and Doug Belshaw. We’ve been discussing Virtual Learning Environments and Learning Platforms on-and-off for weeks now, so the time had come to have the chance to invite some experts in and have a lengthier discussion. We talked to Jeff O’Hara (@zemote), co-founder of Edmodo, discussed the various options when it comes to integrating a VLE, and some ideas for best practice. We finished with approaches for getting all staff onboard when deploying a VLE institution-wide.

After a quick discussion about what constitutes an ‘expert’ in the field of educational technology and how to become one (see this blog post) we moved onto Mary Cooch’s presentation at MoodleMoot. We finished with some discussion of hardware: Tom Barrett told us about the SMART table he’s got on loan in his classroom, then Doug told us about the Optoma Pico projector in which he’s invested!
